Champion Dog Food.
Dog Food Fit for a Champion.
About This Project.
Starting off with our first stage of production, the topic for this project was to create packaging for Champion Dog Food’s line of dog food. I needed to establish the key information that would need to be included in this project: Name of Company, “20% of profits go to a local animal shelter”, “Manufactured in the USA”, ingredients, barcode, 25lb bag & 13oz can packaging design.
The logo is important, if not the most important asset in every design and brand that you will see. Which meant the logo needed to be created first and prioritized. You can see here I’ve provided the initial logo sketches and ideas along with the finished products.
At first I thought of making a dog bone-dumbbell logo for the brand, but as I tried out two more ideas, I ended up scraping that idea in favor of the final logo(s) you see here on the right. Since this is a dog food brand, I wanted the ‘C’ in champion to look as though there were bites taken out of it, with kibble crumbs dropping from it. The ‘O’ in Champion has an animal paw print, just to signify that this is an animal food brand. And below the main logo, you’ll see the condensed version, which is just a mashup of both those assets together.
Color Scheme.
The color scheme is very important to branding. Colors can mean a ton of different things, which is why I ended up settling with a blue color scheme. Why blue? You may ask.
The light blue in this design can represent a multitude of things. But most importantly it represents health, healing and tranquility, while the dark blue represents power, knowledge, integrity and professionalism. The white accents in this design has its own meaning as well. White is often associated with purity, perfection, and is a neutral color. All of these things I want to be associated with this brand of dog food.
Theme.
The theme was a bit more trickier to figure out. Did I want to do what most brand do, and base the design in reality? No, I did not. I wanted my design to look different from all other brands of dog food you’d see on the market today. Something that would catch your eye. So, I settled on a simplistic, professional, monochromatic, attention grabbing theme.
Post Production may have to be the least interesting part of production. It consists of exporting all materials and saving the files. Then organizing said materials, making sure I have everything needed and required. Lastly, all that was left to do was submit for competition when the time came.
